Board of Trustees
Mohammed Dewji – Founder & Trustee
Mohammed Dewji is the founder of the Mo Dewji Foundation and a businessman, entrepreneur, philanthropist, and former politician. He currently works as the CEO of METL, a Tanzanian conglomerate operating in 11 African countries. Dewji previously served as MP for Singida-Urban from 2005 until his retirement in 2015. Recently, Mohammed signed the Giving Pledge, confirming his lifelong commitment to philanthropy and helping the people of Tanzania. As the Founder and Trustee, Mohammed is responsible for shaping and approving the foundation strategies, reviewing results, and setting the organization’s overall direction.
Barbara Gonzalez – Head of Foundation
Barbara Gonzalez works as the head of the Mo Dewji Foundation, overseeing all aspects of the Foundation’s operations. She is responsible for developing strategies to address some of the world’s most challenging inequities and leading all the Foundation’s efforts to promote equity and sustainable livelihoods for all Tanzanians.
Prior to joining the Foundation, Barbara worked at Deloitte Consulting Ltd. for two years. She holds a Master’s degree in Development Management from the London School of Economics and a Bachelor’s degree (honors) in Economics and Political Science from Manhattanville College.
Saira Dewji – Trustee
Saira Dewji was born and raised in Dar es Salaam, although she has been educated in both India and the USA. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Marketing. Saira currently serves on the board of Tumaini La Maisha, which operates the only children’s cancer ward in Tanzania. She is a mother of three beautiful children and feels blessed and compelled to reach out to children who are less fortunate. As a Trustee of the Foundation, Saira guides the vision and strategic direction of the foundation and serves as an advocate for the foundation’s key issues.
Catherine Decker – Project Coordinator
Catherine Decker works as the Project Coordinator for the Mo Dewji Foundation. She is responsible for leading the project team and coordinating the various interventions funded by the foundation. She is responsible for all matters related to project content; implementing the agreed action plan to the agreed standards and deadlines of the foundation, ensuring the effective preparation and delivery of all project events and meetings, ongoing evaluation of project activity and evaluation as well as submitting the final results to the relevant parties.
Prior to working at the foundation Catherine did volunteer work in Cape Town, with a strong focus on sustainable housing and community development. Catherine holds a Bachelors degree in Social Sciences from the University from Cape Town, majoring in Environmental and Geographical Sciences, International Relations and Gender Studies.
