Residents of various parts of the city of Dar es Salaam have been handed free face masks to protect themselves against against novel corona virus pandemic (COVID-19).
The distribution has taken place in markets and transport hubs across Dar es Salaam including areas in Kivukoni, Kariakooo, Tandale, Manzese, Buguruni, Makumbusho, Mabibo, Temeke, Buza, Chamazi, Charambe, Chanika, Mbagala, Masasani, Kimara, Mbezi and Tegeta.
The use of face masks has been advised as a way to reduce the risk of spreading the virus when coughing or sneezing as it limits the distance to which the droplets can travel. The face masks are locally produced by MeTL using locally grown cotton.
These face masks are sturdy and can be used more than once after washing and ironing. The Mo Dewji Foundation has dedicated these face masks as a way of giving back to the community to help maintain best practices that can help in the fight against corona virus, especially for ordinary citizens to be able to protect themselves and fight against the virus.
